What is Transit Insurance ?

Transit Insurance, commonly known as Cargo Insurance or Freight Insurance, covers the loss or damage of cargo between the points of origin and the final destination.

There are many different types of Transit Insurance, however we’ve outlined some of the more common types below:

Single Transit Insurance

This is for ‘one off’ consignments of goods that are transported domestically or overseas.

Unless stated otherwise in your sales agreement or insurance schedule, the insurance will commence from the time the goods leave the warehouse or place of storage at the named destination for the commencement of transit, continues during the ordinary course of transit and terminates upon delivery to the consignee or nominated destination.

Annual Transit Insurance

This is a ‘blanket cover’ for ongoing consignments of goods transported domestically and/or overseas.

Unless stated otherwise in your sales agreement or insurance schedule, the insurance will commence from the time the goods leave the warehouse or place of storage at the named destination for the commencement of transit, continues during the ordinary course of transit and terminates upon delivery to the consignee or nominated destination.

Carriers Load Insurance

This is an insurance cover to protect a carrier for loss or damage to third party goods whilst in their possession for transit.

Specified Items in Transit Insurance

Please Contact Us for more details on this type of insurance. This is a simple and inexpensive annual cover for major transit risks and theft of specified goods regularly transported on any registered road vehicle or trailer.

This product is particularly suitable for tools of trade, mechanical and/or electronic equipment, musical instruments, computers or other equipment, racing cars or boats, suitable for tradesmen, professional people, small businesses, sporting groups, schools and associations. The premium is based on the type of specified items carried and the nominated sum insured.

What does Transit Insurance cover ?

Here’s some basic explanations on what is covered under Single Transit Insurance and Annual Transit Insurance:

Insurance Cover (Imports / Exports)

Unless otherwise stated on your insurance schedule, this is an All Risk insurance covering for loss or damage to the insured goods in transit for Import / Export shipments.

Insurance Cover (Inland)

Unless otherwise stated on your insurance schedule, this is a Comprehensive insurance covering for loss or damage to the insured goods in transit on Domestic transits.

Insurance Cover (Personal Effects, Vehicles, Boats & Caravans)

Unless stated otherwise stated on your insurance schedule, this insurance is a Comprehensive insurance covering you for loss of or damage to your insured personal effects, vehicle, boats or caravans in transit Domestically or Overseas.

What if I’m not sending goods to or from Australia

You will need to Contact Us to arrange insurance for all cross-voyages whereby the goods aren’t being sent to or from Australia (i.e China to USA).

What is my excess?

Your excess will be shown on your insurance quote or schedule. Generally it will be $250 unless otherwise stated.
