Frequently Asked Questions
What can boat insurance cover?
Cover depends on the policy and the insurer, but comprehensive marine policies can include:
- the hull, machinery, equipment and propulsion of commercial vessels against accidental damage, sinking, fire and collision
- protection and indemnity (P&I) for commercial operators: crew injuries, passenger liability, oil pollution and wreck removal
- the boat trailer against accidental damage and theft, with marine roadside assistance extensions
- land transit cover while the boat is towed on a road trailer within Australia
- personal effects and marine electronics, up to a sub-limit
What does boat insurance usually exclude?
Damage from marine growth, barnacles, rot, electrolysis and fibreglass osmosis is excluded as wear, tear and maintenance. Liability for water skiing, wakeboarding or aquaplaning is an optional extension that must be activated, and commercial vessels need separate cover for war and strikes risks.
What do commercial vessel operators need to know?
Commercial vessels must hold a valid Certificate of Survey or Certificate of Operation from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Failing to do so can void your commercial hull insurance. Marine policies also carry a trading limits warranty that restricts cover to a set area, such as a harbour, a set distance offshore or Australian waters.
How do I get a boat insurance quote?
Complete the form above with your vessel details, or call us on 1800 656 836. Marine businesses can also ask about boat dealership insurance. To report an incident, use our claims page.
Should I insure my boat for agreed value or market value?
Agreed value pays a set amount, shown on your schedule, if the boat is a total loss, which gives certainty. Market value pays what the boat is worth at the time of the loss, which may be less than you expect. Most owners of valuable boats choose agreed value.
Am I covered if I take my boat interstate or offshore?
Only within the navigation limits shown on your policy schedule. If you plan an offshore passage, an interstate delivery or a trip beyond your usual waters, tell us beforehand so the limits can be extended if the insurer agrees.
Does boat insurance cover my liability if someone is injured?
Comprehensive pleasure craft policies typically include legal liability for injury to other people or damage to their property, up to the limit on your schedule. Commercial operators usually need protection and indemnity (P&I) cover.
What details do I need for a boat insurance quote?
The type of vessel, make, model, length, year and hull material, engine details, its value, where it is kept (mooring, marina or trailer), how it is used (private, commercial or charter), and the skipper’s experience and claims history.
What types of boats can FIS International insure?
FIS International can arrange insurance for power boats, personal watercraft (PWC) such as jet skis, yachts and super yachts, for private or commercial use. Our marine team researches options across major Australian boat insurance providers to find suitable comprehensive cover. Commercial and charter vessels are usually insured on different terms from pleasure craft, so tell us how the vessel is used when you request a quote.
